Transition House

WHO WE ARE

When Transition House opened its doors in Cambridge over 40 years ago, it was the first domestic violence shelter on the East Coast and the second in the entire country. Since then, our programs have continued to grow to meet the needs of our community. Today, Transition House offers a wide range of housing resources, support services and prevention tools. In the last few years alone we have built nationally groundbreaking partnerships that sustain family stability and emphasize a whole-community approach to violence prevention.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Transition House welcomes volunteers! In most cases, volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Select volunteer opportunities are available during the summer for adolescents ages 13-17. Volunteers who are 13-15 years old must be accompanied by a parent during the orientation and all volunteering hours.  Volunteer opportunities for adolescents ages 13-17 are not available during the school year (September 1-June 30).Here are examples of what our current volunteers are doing:

  • Trained volunteers are providing homework help and supervised playtime with children each weekday evening.
  • A team of professional artists and designers are creating a unique multimedia exhibition to reframe public understanding about domestic violence.
  • Finance professionals are assisting clients to budget their income, save for the future, and rebuild credit after financial abuse.

Our volunteer needs vary over the course of the year. Please download the Volunteer Application Form and email it to our Volunteer Coordinator, Amanda Thorne, at athorne@transitionhouse.org.
