Join us January 20th for the 15th annual MLKday of service & learning
January 20th holds meaning this year for many. Is it fortuitous that MLKDAY falls on our Nation’s inauguration day? We think so. The MLKDAY of Service and Learning is perfect for the day because we can all agree that lending a helping hand with warmth, kindness, and compassion is the best way to spend the day while honoring the legacy of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
Whether you are joining us for the very first time or are a long- time supporter of the day, we know that this year’s event will be full of inspiration, reflection, and community action. Many Helping Hands and partners My Brother’s Keeper, Central Square Church, and YWCA Cambridge along with the City of Cambridge continue the tradition of providing service projects on the day but also in the weeks surrounding MLKDAY.
Yes, it takes a village. In past years, your work and efforts have provided critical items for over 70 local organizations supporting folks in need of extra care and consideration in our City. This year, the needs are greater than ever, and our mission is to continue to provide opportunities to “lend a helping hand.”
MLKDAY will begin with a Welcome Gathering at Central Square Church where we will hear local youth speak the words of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Volunteers and the community will meet at this historic Church, formally The First Baptist Church, Cambridge which hosted Martin Luther King to speak in 1960. The church is designated on the National Register of Historic Places and parts of the sanctuary of this magnificent church was recently renovated. After the gathering, musicians will lead volunteers to City Hall, the Senior Center, and YWCA to kick start the MLK DAY hands- on projects of Valentine making, designing sewing and creating blankets and scarves, and sorting clothes, books and food. All of these items, sorted or created by our volunteers (yes, you!) will be delivered to area shelters just in time for these colder winter months. Seniors, adults, teens, and children all benefit from the work done at the MLKDAY of Service. We also know that one day will not provide all the support that the community needs. Please consider joining in on the opportunities listed here in the weeks surrounding our event day.
We hope to see you on the 20th but know that everyone can’t participate in January. This link will help you identify other service opportunities throughout the year in Cambridge.
