"CELEBRATE THE COAST" MONUMENT

Artist: David Phillips, 2016
Material: Perforated stainless steel on granite base, with bronze relief

“Celebrate the Coast” was developed as part of the Western Avenue Reconstruction Project, and was a collaboration between artist, David Phillips, and the landscape architects, Halverson Design Partnership.

Images depicted in the relief include posters from the ‘Beat the Belt’ movement; a flyer for MLK’s sermon at First Baptist Church; the Olympia Theatre; among others.

The rich history and stories of  The Coast neighborhood were also incorporated into 13 bronze inlays located along Western Avenue with historic images of The Coast Neighborhood, placed from Cronin Park to Memorial Drive. The smaller reliefs include the facade from The Western Front club; 4th of July community celebration at Hoyt Field; The Mission; Cambridge Community Center; the Houghton School (now the Dr. MLK Jr. School on Putnam Ave.), among others.
