Founded in 2003, the Outdoor Church is a church among chronically homeless men and women in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Without any building, the church exists in our consistent presence outdoors. By showing up every week for eight years, in every season, the ministers have developed relationships of trust with most of the chronically homeless men and women in Cambridge. Through these relationships, they turn volunteer partnerships and in-kind donations into a thriving ministry that serves the physical and spiritual needs of our congregation.
Most of the homeless people they seek to serve have lived outdoors in Cambridge for an extended period of time and are uniformly impoverished and in poor health; many are substance abusers, mentally unstable, or both. Since its founding in 2003, the Outdoor Church has ministered to nearly 100 homeless men and women each week. Its mission is to be their church by meeting them wherever they are, without judgment. The material goods they offer—food, socks, and toiletries—are part of the larger mission to demonstrate to homeless men and women that they are loved and valued members of a church community.
