Founded in 1966, Cambridge School Volunteers (CSV) is an independent non-profit organization that is dedicated to assisting Cambridge public school students achieve their educational goals. CSV develops programs that match caring and competent adults with students of all needs and levels of learning. CSV employs a professional staff of ten (full and part-time) who oversee these programs and who are also responsible for the placement of more than 900 volunteers annually working in the 12 elementary schools and the high school.
Our talented volunteers range in age from older teens to those in their 80’s and include working professionals, retirees, undergraduate and graduate students, parents, and others from Cambridge and surrounding communities.
Volunteers serve as individual tutors, classroom and library assistants, and special project leaders. CSV volunteers help students with basic subjects, including reading, language arts, math, science, and ESL, as well as assist with college essay writing, Science Olympiad coaching, and MCAS preparation. In addition, CSV manages the CRLS Tutoring Center, offering before, during, and after-school help, as well as an early morning Drop-In Math Center.
